Is Mount Rushmore Worth It? A Straight Answer for 2027 Trips
What it costs, how long it takes, and when to skip it
Updated: October 9, 2026 | NPS hours page last updated September 30, 2026
Yes, if you are already in the Black Hills. It is a one-to-two-hour stop with no entrance fee, and it stops being worth it when it is the only reason for a long drive or when you land at noon on a July Saturday. The rest of this page covers the cost, the time, the months that are worth less, and the ways to see the carving without the lot.
Is Mount Rushmore worth it?
Yes if you are already in the Black Hills, no as the sole reason for a long detour. Mount Rushmore has no entrance fee, but parking is $10 per vehicle ($5 for seniors 62 and older), and America the Beautiful and other federal passes do not cover it. NPS activity times add up to 1 to 2 hours. The evening lighting program runs nightly from late May through September 30, at 9 p.m. until August 9 and 8 p.m. after, on the 2026 schedule. Pair the memorial with Crazy Horse and Custer State Park, and skip midday in July. If you add Crazy Horse, hotels near Crazy Horse Monument in Custer or Hill City shorten the drive.

Our read: for $10 you get a ticket that NPS says allows unlimited entry to the memorial for one year, a 0.6-mile trail, a film, and the most recognizable sculpture in the country. That is a fair price for an hour or two. It is not a full day, and it does not repay a long detour on its own.
Go if
• You are staying in Keystone, Hill City, Custer or Rapid City, all within about 25 miles
• It is a first Black Hills trip and the carving is on your list
• You are driving the Crazy Horse and Custer State Park corridor anyway
• You want the evening program, which runs only late May through September
• You are traveling with kids: NPS runs a Junior Ranger program
Skip or shrink it if
• Rushmore would be the only stop on a long solo detour
• You have a half day and would rather spend it on wildlife or a drive
• You would arrive between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in July or Sturgis week
• You have seen it before and only want a photo, so a distant viewpoint will do
• It is winter and the trail and evening program are the draw
There is no entrance fee. The cost is parking in the concession-run facility, and no federal pass changes that.

“Mount Rushmore National Memorial does not charge an entrance fee. However, a parking fee is required to park in the concession-operated parking facility.”
The passes that do not cover parking, per NPS: the America the Beautiful annual pass, Senior Pass, Access Pass, both military passes and the Every Kid Outdoors Pass. The one-year ticket does mean a second visit within 12 months, say a daytime stop and an evening program on different days, costs nothing extra. For the current hours and anything that has changed, check our Mount Rushmore tickets, hours and fees guide.
How Much Time You Need
NPS groups its main activities under “If you have one to two hours.” Added up, the durations it lists for the three of them come to 65 to 135 minutes.
Activity
NPS time
What it is
Presidential Trail
20 to 45 min
0.6-mile loop from the Grand View Terrace. The first 0.2 miles is accessible; the last 0.4 miles has 422 stairs.
Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center
30 to 60 min
Exhibits and a 14-minute film on why and how the mountain was carved
Sculptor's Studio
15 to 30 min
Summer only. Tools, the artist's working model and 15-minute talks.
Ranger talk
30 min
Daily June through September, starting on the Grand View Terrace
Evening lighting program
45 min
Ranger talk, the film “Voices of America,” then the lighting. Nightly late May through September.
A practical split: the terrace and trail alone fit in an hour. Add the visitor center film and a studio talk and you are at two. The time you cannot control is the parking garage in summer. NPS says traffic on the highways is heaviest in the middle of the day and that backups sometimes form at the garage gates.
If you would rather not drive it yourself, the Mount Rushmore tours page compares guided options that fold the memorial into Crazy Horse and Custer State Park.
When Mount Rushmore Is Worth Less
Visits are not spread evenly. Across 2022 through 2025, NPS counted 8,627,622 recreation visits at the memorial, and about 63% of them came in June, July and August. July alone was about 25%. December and January were about 1% each.
The annual total moved too: NPS lists 2,431,195 recreation visits in 2023, 1,850,329 in 2024, and the NPS monthly report shows 1,905,649 in 2025. The seasonal shape held in every one of those years, so a lower total did not flatten the summer peak. Source: NPS Visitor Use Statistics.

Shares are computed from NPS monthly recreation visits for 2022 through 2025 combined. Program dates and hours are the 2026 NPS schedule; NPS adjusts them each year.
Our read on the trade-off: the quietest months are the ones with the fewest things to do. From October 1 there is no evening program, the Sculptor's Studio is closed, and the trail is often shut by snow and ice in winter. The sculpture itself is lit every night of the year, from sunset to 9 p.m. between October 1 and March 9. The best balance is early June or September, covered in our best time to visit Mount Rushmore guide, and the worst windows are laid out in the worst time to visit Mount Rushmore.
Seeing the Carving Without Paying for Parking
Two official sources describe views of the carving from outside the memorial. Both are distant views, and neither includes the terrace, the trail, the studio or the evening program.
Norbeck Overlook
The Black Hills National Forest says the overlook sits on Iron Mountain southeast of the memorial and gives a view of the carving from about one mile.
From Keystone, take Highway 244 west to the junction with US 16A, then go south on 16A for about four miles. The Forest Service page lists no restrooms or potable water, and no fee.
South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks describes the 17-mile road as passing through three tunnels that frame Mount Rushmore in the distance. It lists the expected travel time at 60 or more minutes.
The narrowest and lowest openings matter for RVs and trailers: the C.C. Gideon Tunnel is 11'6" wide by 10'9" high. GFP also says the road closes periodically in winter.
Our read: a view from a mile away saves $10, which makes sense for a return visit or a pass-through drive. It does not replace the memorial for a first trip, and the Iron Mountain Road drive is a better reason to take that road than a parking workaround.
Is the Lighting Ceremony Worth It?
The program is a 45-minute event in the outdoor amphitheater: a ranger talk, the captioned film “Voices of America,” and the lighting of the sculpture. It runs nightly from late May through the end of September, and no reservation is needed.
May 23 to August 9 (2026)
Program starts at 9 p.m. Illumination runs 9:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.
August 10 to September 30 (2026)
Program starts at 8 p.m. Illumination runs 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Our read: it is worth it if you sleep in Keystone (about 3 miles away) or Hill City, because the drive back is short and the one-year parking ticket from your daytime visit already covers the entry. It is a harder sell from Rapid City, where a 9 p.m. start means a drive of roughly 25 miles after dark. If you miss the program, the sculpture is still lit nightly: sunset to 11 p.m. from March 10 to May 22, and sunset to 9 p.m. from October 1 through March 9.
The tours below that pair Custer State Park with the lighting ceremony are the easy way to do it without a night drive.
Half-Day Choice: Rushmore, Crazy Horse or Custer State Park
If you can only do one, these are the numbers that decide it.
Mount Rushmore
Crazy Horse Memorial
Custer State Park
Cost
$10 parking per vehicle
$30 per vehicle of 3 or more, Oct 1, 2026 to May 14, 2027
$25 per vehicle, good for 1 to 7 days
Time
1 to 2 hours
Three museums, an orientation film and the veranda view; our estimate is 2 to 3 hours
Iron Mountain Road alone is 60+ minutes; Wildlife Loop is about 1.5 hours
Best for
The finished carving and the trail
Museums and the work still under way
Wildlife, scenic drives and hiking
Sources: NPS (Mount Rushmore), Crazy Horse Memorial's pricing page, South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks. Crazy Horse changes its rate on May 15 and October 1; Custer State Park times are GFP's expected drive times.
Crazy Horse is 17 miles southwest of Mount Rushmore, per the memorial. Our read for a single half day: pick Rushmore if the finished carving is the point (Crazy Horse is still unfinished), pick Crazy Horse if you want museums and time indoors, and pick Custer State Park if you want to be outside. Read the head-to-head in Mount Rushmore vs Crazy Horse, then see Crazy Horse Memorial and Custer State Park for each in depth.
With a full day, Rushmore in the morning and Crazy Horse after lunch is the combination that costs the least driving, and Custer State Park fits the next morning.
Where to Stay for Mount Rushmore
Keystone is about 3 miles from the memorial, Hill City about 13, and Rapid City about 25. The closer base buys early-morning and after-dark access; Rapid City buys the widest choice of rooms. Compare all three on Keystone hotels, Hill City hotels and lodging near Mount Rushmore.

Battle Creek Lodge
Keystone, walkable to town
A locally owned lodge close to Keystone's restaurants and evening attractions. Travel South Dakota lists it as open May through September.
A better match for families who want to spend part of the day at the property. It sits outside the small downtown core. KOA lists the resort as open May 1 to October 1.
Yes, as a one-to-two-hour stop when you are already in the Black Hills. Entry is free, parking is $10 per vehicle, and the ticket is good for unlimited entry for a year. It is a poor reason for a long solo detour: pair it with Crazy Horse Memorial, 17 miles away, and Custer State Park.
How long does Mount Rushmore take?
Plan 1 to 2 hours. NPS lists the Presidential Trail at 20 to 45 minutes, the Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center at 30 to 60 minutes, and the Sculptor's Studio at 15 to 30 minutes (summer only). Adding the 45-minute evening program turns it into a second visit after dinner.
Is Mount Rushmore worth the drive from Rapid City?
Yes if you combine it with something else. The memorial is about 25 miles from Rapid City, and Crazy Horse is another 17 miles past it. The site's own drive-time page puts it at about 35 minutes each way, so the carving alone is about 70 minutes of driving for one to two hours on site. Build the day around the Keystone, Hill City and Custer corridor instead.
Can you see Mount Rushmore without paying for parking?
Yes, from a distance. The Forest Service lists Norbeck Overlook as a view of the carving from about one mile, and the Forest Service page lists no restrooms or water there. The three tunnels on Iron Mountain Road frame the carving in the distance, per South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks. Neither gets you onto the terrace, the trail or the evening program.
Is Mount Rushmore underwhelming?
It can be if you expect to walk up to the carving. Washington's head is 60 feet tall, per NPS, and you see the sculpture from the Grand View Terrace and the 0.6-mile Presidential Trail, not from inside the mountain. If you want a hike, wildlife or a drive, Custer State Park delivers more per hour.
Does my America the Beautiful pass cover Mount Rushmore parking?
No. NPS says the America the Beautiful annual pass, the Senior Pass, the Access Pass, the military passes and the Every Kid Outdoors Pass cannot be used for parking at Mount Rushmore, because they cover entrance fees and the parking is a concession fee. Active duty military park free; seniors 62 and older pay $5 at the entry booth.
