Badlands National Park - Sunset and Stargazing (Private)

Badlands National Park - Sunset and Stargazing (Private)

Private tour · 7h

Viator snapshot: 5.0/5 (26 reviews)

Route and experience details

A once in a lifetime opportunity to visit the incredible Badlands; first in the afternoon and into a golden sunset - followed by the official National Park stargazing program. The best of both worlds, this tour allows us the view wildlife and the parks formations before the sun sets, and then taking on the park after dark! Because Badlands National Park is not surrounded by big cities or other major sources of light pollution, night skies in the park are very clear. After dark, visitors can see many of the night sky’s greatest hits: constellations, the moon, satellites, and airplanes. But the special darkness of Badlands National Park helps visitors to see even more like planets, the Milky Way, star clusters, nebulae, the International Space Station, shooting stars, and, very occasionally, the aurora borealis.

Best overall

State Game Lodge if location and wildlife matter most; Hotel Alex Johnson if dining and a conventional hotel matter more.

Best for a splurge

Under Canvas for atmosphere, or Sylvan Lake Lodge for a quieter park setting.

Best value in this category

A good lodge in Keystone or Custer can beat an expensive room if you will spend most of the day outside.

The properties worth comparing

Rapid City

Hotel Alex Johnson

Historic city stay

Check current rates (opens in a new tab)

The clearest luxury choice when you want a proper downtown hotel, restaurants nearby, and a convenient launch point for day trips.

Trade-off: You are in the city, not inside the Black Hills landscape.

Custer State Park

State Game Lodge

Wildlife and location

Check current rates (opens in a new tab)

The location is the amenity. Early access to the Wildlife Loop and less daily driving can matter more than a larger room or spa.

Trade-off: Park lodging books early and feels rustic rather than resort-polished. It is seasonal, open from the beginning of May through October.

Custer State Park

Sylvan Lake Lodge

Scenery and quiet

Check current rates (opens in a new tab)

A memorable choice for travelers who want to wake near the Needles Highway and Sylvan Lake instead of commuting from town.

Trade-off: The setting is remote, and it closes for the winter; the resort lists its season as the beginning of May through October.

Near Keystone

Under Canvas Mount Rushmore

A special occasion

Check current rates (opens in a new tab)

High-end glamping makes the stay itself part of the trip. It is a better splurge for atmosphere than for traditional hotel amenities.

Trade-off: You are still camping: temperatures, dust, and outdoor bathrooms may be part of the deal. The 2026 season ended September 28; the 2027 season runs April 29 to September 27.

Keystone area

K Bar S Lodge

Quiet lodge comfort

Check current rates (opens in a new tab)

A calmer alternative to a downtown motel, with views and a lodge feel while keeping Mount Rushmore accessible.

Trade-off: Plan to drive into Keystone for dinner and evening activity. It is a seasonal hotel, open mid-April to October.

What makes the upgrade worth it?

  • Location: staying inside Custer State Park can save a long drive at the start and end of every day.
  • Privacy: a lodge or glamping site can feel special even without a full-service spa.
  • Character: historic buildings and lake settings offer something a chain hotel cannot reproduce.
  • Timing: peak summer prices are hardest to justify if you will only sleep there between long drives.

Are there five-star hotels?

Not in the conventional urban-resort sense. Black Hills luxury is mostly about location, history, quiet, and access to the landscape rather than room-service depth or a large spa.

How far ahead should you book?

For July, August, and popular park lodges, start several months ahead. Shoulder season gives you more flexibility, but always check the property’s operating dates before building the itinerary around it. From November to mid-April, State Game Lodge, Sylvan Lake Lodge, Under Canvas and K Bar S are all closed, which leaves the Rapid City option. In Custer State Park, only Creekside Lodge operates in winter.
