Battle Creek Lodge
Walkable, personal stay
A locally owned lodge close to Keystone’s restaurants and evening attractions. A good fit when you want advice from people who live there.
Watch for: Smaller and more old-fashioned than a chain hotel.
Open in winter? No. Travel South Dakota lists it as open from the first of May through September.
K Bar S Lodge
Quiet views and breakfast
A quieter lodge setting with hill views and breakfast. It suits couples who would trade a central address for a calmer night.
Watch for: You will drive into town rather than walk everywhere.
Open in winter? No. The lodge says it is open from mid-April through October.
Under Canvas Mount Rushmore
A memorable outdoor stay
Choose it for the setting and the feeling of being outside. Pack for cooler evenings and expect a different rhythm than a motel in town.
Watch for: Canvas lodging is part of the experience, so it is not the choice for a conventional hotel room.
Open in winter? No. Its season runs May through September, per Travel South Dakota.
Comfort Inn & Suites Mt. Rushmore
Families and familiar basics
A practical pick when breakfast, a pool, larger rooms, and predictable amenities matter more than historic character. It is at 321 Swanzey Street in town and used to be the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Mt. Rushmore, so some booking sites, Expedia included, still show the old name for the same building.
Watch for: Less distinctive than the independent lodges.
Open in winter? Not confirmed. We could not find winter dates on an official page, so ask the hotel before booking November to April.
Palmer Gulch Resort
Families who want activities on site
A better match for a family that wants to spend part of the day at the property, with resort activities and room to spread out.
Watch for: The resort is outside the small downtown core.
Open in winter? No. KOA lists Mount Rushmore KOA Resort at Palmer Gulch as open May 1 to October 1.
Staying in Keystone from November to April
Most of the short list is seasonal. Battle Creek Lodge and Under Canvas close after September, K Bar S Lodge after October, and the KOA resort at Palmer Gulch on October 1. Rushmore Express describes itself as open seasonally. We could not confirm winter dates for the chain hotels in town from their official pages, so call before you book a stay between November and April.
Mount Rushmore itself stays open. From November 1 the grounds are open 6:00 am to 9:00 pm and the visitor center 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, per the National Park Service. Our Mount Rushmore hours and parking page covers the parking fee and the summer schedule. If Keystone has nothing open for your dates, Rapid City hotels give you the widest choice, and Hill City hotels are about 13 miles from the memorial. Our best time to visit Mount Rushmore guide covers what changes there in fall and winter. Here for the 1880 Train Holiday Express or the holiday parades? Our Black Hills Christmas events guide has the 2026 dates.
Road work in Keystone through April 2027
US-16A is closed at the S.D. Highway 40 intersection in Keystone while the state replaces the bridge there with a box culvert. The closure started October 5, 2026, and SDDOT plans to reopen the highway by April 23, 2027. A short signed detour carries traffic around the work zone on town streets, controlled by temporary signals, with a 12-foot width limit and a 50-foot length limit. Expect a few extra minutes getting in and out of Keystone, and check the project page before you arrive with a large RV or a trailer. Check SD511 for the current status.

Check dates on Viator (opens in a new tab)Is Keystone the right base?
Choose Keystone for the shortest Mount Rushmore mornings and a walkable tourist town. Choose Custer for more restaurants, outdoor access, and a better base for Custer State Park. Choose Rapid City for the widest hotel and dining selection.
How far is Mount Rushmore?
Keystone is about 3 miles from the memorial, roughly a 10-minute drive. That proximity is the main reason to pay Keystone’s summer premium: you can arrive early, return for a break, and come back for the evening program without crossing the Hills.
Keystone hotels FAQ
Which Keystone hotels are open in winter?
Fewer than in summer. Battle Creek Lodge (May through September), Under Canvas Mount Rushmore (May through September), K Bar S Lodge (mid-April through October) and the KOA resort at Palmer Gulch (May 1 to October 1) all close for winter, and Rushmore Express describes itself as open seasonally. We could not confirm winter dates for the chain hotels in Keystone from their official pages, so call before booking, or stay in Rapid City or Hill City.
How far is Keystone from Mount Rushmore?
About 3 miles, roughly a 10-minute drive. Keystone is the closest town to the memorial.
Is Keystone worth it in winter?
Only if you find an open room and Mount Rushmore is the main goal. The memorial is open every day, with grounds hours of 6:00 am to 9:00 pm through March 9, 2027; its buildings close on December 25. Several Keystone lodges close for the season, so Rapid City gives you more choice for rooms and food in winter.
