Custer is the useful southern base for the Black Hills. The town gives you restaurants and fuel; the state park starts close enough for an early wildlife drive; Wind Cave, Jewel Cave, and Crazy Horse are all within a manageable outing. Sleep inside the park for access and quiet, or stay in town for choice and convenience.
Staying in Custer this winter?
Custer State Park's four resort lodges (State Game Lodge, Sylvan Lake Lodge, Blue Bell Lodge and Legion Lake Lodge) are open from the beginning of May through October, so three of our picks below are closed until spring. Creekside Lodge, in the State Game Lodge area, is the only park lodge that operates in winter, with limited front-desk hours and a continental breakfast; the resort restaurants are closed. A few park cabins also take winter stays. Both are listed on the operator's winter stays page. In town, confirm your dates on the booking page, because several small motels are seasonal too.
The Wildlife Loop is open all year. Needles Highway closes to vehicles with the first snow and does not reopen until April 1 or later, per GFP. Planning ahead for summer 2027? Dakota News Now reported that Xanterra takes over the park lodges on February 1, 2027, so lodge booking channels may change.
Custer's Christmas Parade is on December 5; our Black Hills Christmas events guide has the time and the other town parades. For what else is open, see the Black Hills in December guide.
Our quick picks
State Game Lodge is the best all-around park stay from May through October. Bavarian Inn is the easiest family choice. Rocket Motel and Chalet Motel are the town picks when walkability, price, or character matter more than resort amenities.

Inside Custer State Park
Best for dawn and dusk wildlife drives, lake views, and a trip where the lodging is part of the experience. The $25 vehicle entrance license still applies, and rooms go early for summer.
Town of Custer
Best for dinner, groceries, lower starting rates, and a wider choice of room types. You will drive a little farther into the park, but the trade is usually worth it for families and road-trippers.
Why stay in Custer?
- Wildlife: Custer State Park is close enough for a dawn run on the Wildlife Loop before the busiest traffic. See Custer State Park weather by month before you pick dates.
- Scenic roads: The Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road fit naturally into a Custer-based day, subject to seasonal and vehicle restrictions.
- Caves: Wind Cave and Jewel Cave are realistic day outings from town; reserve Jewel Cave tickets and Wind Cave tours ahead in summer.
- Crazy Horse: Crazy Horse Memorial is close enough to pair with a relaxed morning in town or a drive toward Hill City, where Hill City hotels put you closer to Mount Rushmore.

Before you book
When do park lodges open?
The four resort lodges (State Game, Sylvan Lake, Blue Bell and Legion Lake) open from the beginning of May through October. In winter, Creekside Lodge is the only park lodge that operates. Summer weekends and the Buffalo Roundup sell first. If the lodge calendar does not work, use Custer town as the fallback.
What is the best budget hotel?
Start with the Chalet Motel for simple rooms and local character, then check the Rocket Motel if you want a walkable downtown stay with a little more design personality.
Is Custer a good base for Mount Rushmore?
Yes, especially if you are also visiting the park and Crazy Horse. Hotels in Keystone SD are closer to Mount Rushmore itself, while Custer gives you the better southern Hills position.
