Custer State Park

Custer State Park, South Dakota

Plan Custer State Park around the drives

The park is large enough that the order matters. Start with the Wildlife Loop, connect the scenic roads, and leave room for one hike or lake stop instead of trying to do every trail.

Visiting between October and April

Needles Highway closes to vehicles with the first snow and does not reopen until April 1 or later, per South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks. Iron Mountain Road can close for stretches in winter, and Wildlife Loop Road is open all year. From the end of October, Custer Resorts keeps only Creekside Lodge and a few cabins open, and the lodge restaurants are closed. Check SD511 before you set out.

The bison herd will be smaller this winter. South Dakota News Watch put it at about 1,500 head this fall, with an estimated 612 going to the November 7 auction because of drought; park staff said that takes the herd back down to about 900. Our Custer State Park herd size and Roundup statistics page has the figures and sources, and the next Buffalo Roundup is Friday, September 24, 2027.

Best first drive

Wildlife Loop Road, especially early or late when animals and light are usually better.

Best scenic drive

Needles Highway, if you are comfortable with tight turns and narrow tunnels.

Best base

Custer is practical for park access. In-park lodges are more atmospheric but book earlier and cost more.

The stops worth planning around

Wildlife Loop Road

Allow about 1.5–2 hours without long stops. Go early or late for better wildlife viewing, and slow down for bison rather than trying to pass them.

Needles Highway

This is the dramatic drive: granite spires, tight turns, and narrow tunnels. It is scenic, not fast, so do not schedule it as a quick transfer.

Sylvan Lake

A strong picnic and photo stop near the Needles. Add a lakeside walk if you want a break from the car.

Black Elk Peak

The region’s big hike, with a real elevation gain and exposed sections. Start early and treat the weather seriously.

Cathedral Spires

A shorter, steeper hike for travelers who want granite scenery without committing to the full summit day.

Begging burros

The burros are a memorable roadside encounter, but keep food and hands to yourself and give the animals room.

A good one-day order

  1. Morning: enter early and drive the Wildlife Loop before the heat and traffic build.
  2. Late morning: stop for lunch or a short walk, then continue toward Sylvan Lake and the Needles Highway.
  3. Afternoon: choose Sylvan Lake, Cathedral Spires, or a shorter trail based on the weather and your energy.
  4. Evening: return through Custer or stay near the park. Do not rush the scenic road to make a dinner reservation.

How much time do you need?

A rushed day can cover the two headline drives. Two days feels better if you want wildlife, a hike, and time at Sylvan Lake without treating every stop as a photo from the car window.

What should you bring?

Water, sun protection, layers, offline directions, and patience for wildlife traffic. Fuel up before the park and check road restrictions if your route includes the narrow scenic highways. For typical temperatures and snowfall, see Black Hills weather by month; the best time to visit Custer State Park guide covers which roads and lodges close in winter.

Make Custer part of a larger route

Pair the park with Custer lodging, Mount Rushmore, or Wind Cave National Park. To choose your month, see the best time to visit the Black Hills.
