The Black Hills is compact. Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, and Wind Cave all sit within about an hour of each other, and Rapid City puts you within striking distance of every one. This guide gives you the real driving distances and drive times, plus what to see along the way.

How Far Is Mount Rushmore From Rapid City?

Mount Rushmore is about 25 miles (roughly a 35-minute drive) southwest of Rapid City, the region's main airport and hub. Nearly everyone flies into Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP), rents a car, and uses the city as a base. From there, most Black Hills attractions sit within an hour of each other, so you rarely spend long stretches behind the wheel once you arrive. There is no entrance ticket at the memorial; budget the $10 parking fee and check seasonal hours.

Drive Times From Mount Rushmore

Once you are at the memorial, the rest of the scenic core is close. These approximate distances show how easy it is to chain Mount Rushmore together with Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, and Wind Cave in a single day.

Keystone is your closest base: at about 3 miles and 10 minutes from the memorial, it lets you reach the carving early or make the short drive back after the evening lighting ceremony, which runs nightly from late May through the end of September (from October to May the sculpture is simply lit at sunset). Staying close? Compare hotels in Keystone, and check their open dates if you travel between November and April. Or see our Rapid City hotels guide for the widest year-round lodging instead.

How Far Is Custer From Rapid City?

Custer is about 41 miles southwest of Rapid City, roughly an hour on US-16 and US-16/385 through Hill City. Custer State Park starts closer: about 35 miles and 50 minutes to the Game Lodge area.

As a day trip from Rapid City, Custer works well. Crazy Horse Memorial sits on the same highway, 4 miles north of town, and Jewel Cave is 13 miles west. Loop back through the park on the Wildlife Loop, which is open all year. Needles Highway is different: South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks closes it to vehicles with the first snow and does not reopen it until April 1 or later (GFP scenic drives).

Staying the night instead? Compare Custer hotels with the in-park options in the Custer State Park lodging guide.

How Far Is Spearfish From Deadwood?

Spearfish sits about 14 miles from Deadwood, a 20-minute drive on I-90 and US-85. Take the long way through Spearfish Canyon on US-14A and the trip runs about 30 miles and 45 minutes, with Bridal Veil Falls and Roughlock Falls on the way. See the Spearfish Canyon guide for stops.

Getting to the Black Hills From Major Cities

The Black Hills sit in a quiet corner of western South Dakota, so the nearest big cities are still a long day's drive away. If you would rather fly, Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP) is the closest airport, about 35 miles from Mount Rushmore by the National Park Service's count (the airport sits east of the city), with connections through Denver, Minneapolis, Chicago, Dallas, and other hubs.

Denver, CO

About 380 miles, roughly a 6-hour drive north on I-25 and US-85 through Wyoming. A popular fly-in alternative if RAP fares are high.

Sioux Falls, SD

About 370 miles, roughly a 5 hour 15 minute straight shot west on I-90. The main drive-in route from the eastern half of the state.

Both drives are long but easy, mostly interstate with plenty of fuel and food stops. If you are coming from Sioux Falls or anywhere east on I-90, the Badlands and Wall Drug sit right on your route and make a natural stop before you reach Rapid City.

Rapid City to Mount Rushmore

The most common first drive of any Black Hills trip is the roughly 25-mile, 35-minute run from Rapid City to Mount Rushmore. The direct route follows US-16 southwest through the pines, but the more scenic option loops through Keystone on US-16A. Either way it is a short, easy drive that climbs steadily into the hills.

Directions from Rapid City

  1. From I-90, take the Rapid City exit and follow US-16 southwest toward Keystone.
  2. At Keystone, pick up SD-244, the road that runs up to the memorial entrance and parking structure.
  3. Coming from Custer or Hill City instead, take US-385 north to SD-244.

Route per the National Park Service directions page. There is no public transportation to the memorial, so you need a car or a tour. Our Mount Rushmore tours guide covers the guided options from Rapid City.

In late fall and winter, plan on the main US-16 route; skiers heading to Terry Peak head to Lead instead, 8 miles beyond Deadwood. Needles Highway closes to vehicles with the first snow and stays closed until April 1 or later, and Iron Mountain Road can close for stretches after storms, per South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, so save the scenic loops for a clear day and check SD511 first. The memorial grounds close at 9:00 p.m. through March 9; see Mount Rushmore hours and parking.

En route you pass a cluster of family attractions, from Bear Country USA and Reptile Gardens to the old-west storefronts of Keystone at the memorial's doorstep. Arriving before 9 AM beats both the parking crunch and the midday crowds, and it gives you softer morning light on the granite faces.

Mount Rushmore to Crazy Horse to Custer State Park (the Scenic Core)

The heart of the Black Hills is a tight triangle. Mount Rushmore to Crazy Horse Memorial is only about 17 miles and 30 minutes, and Custer State Park is a similar hop from either. You can string all three together in a single day without ever driving more than about half an hour between stops. To start the day closer, look at hotels near Crazy Horse Memorial. Plan 2 to 3 hours at Crazy Horse; Crazy Horse admission is per car.

This is also where the driving becomes the attraction. The Iron Mountain Road and Needles Highway sections of the Black Hills scenic drives thread between the monuments with pigtail bridges, granite tunnels that frame Mount Rushmore, and pull-offs above the pine forest. Add Custer State Park's Wildlife Loop Road for bison, pronghorn, and the park's famous begging burros, and the short distances start to fill a full, unhurried day. From late fall into spring, plan around closures. The Needles Highway route has no fixed closing date, but SDDOT gates its northern section once winter weather arrives, and park officials note that any scenic drive can close for weather, so check SD511 before counting on these routes in the colder months.

Wind Cave National Park sits right on Custer State Park's southern border, about 10 to 12 miles and 20 minutes from the Game Lodge area, so it is easy to tack on. See our Custer State Park and Wind Cave National Park guides to plan the pairing.

Adding Devils Tower or the Badlands as a Day Trip

The two big out-and-back day trips run close to 2 hours each way from Mount Rushmore: about 2 hours 15 minutes to Devils Tower and 1 hour 45 minutes to the Badlands. Devils Tower, in northeast Wyoming, is about 130 miles from Mount Rushmore (roughly 110 miles from Rapid City) and pairs naturally with Deadwood or Spearfish Canyon on the way. Badlands National Park lies about 95 miles east, a landscape of banded spires that is best in early morning or at sunset, with Wall Drug an easy stop alongside it.

Devils Tower is the one worth thinking about twice, because there is no town at it: the nearest lodging of any kind is a campground and a bed and breakfast, and the nearest hotels are in Hulett, about 9 to 10 miles away. Our guide to hotels near Devils Tower weighs day-tripping it against sleeping out there.

First-timers consistently underestimate how much time the Black Hills needs. Between the short but winding drives, the wildlife stops, and the sheer number of sights, most itineraries work best at 3 to 4 days. Do not plan to only see Mount Rushmore and leave. Give yourself room to add Custer State Park and at least one big day trip, ideally the Badlands.

Our Black Hills itinerary guide turns these distances into a day-by-day plan, and the scenic drives guide maps the best routes between them.
