Choose your season
Best balance
September
Comfortable days, strong wildlife viewing, and better odds of open scenic roads than late fall. The Buffalo Roundup adds a crowd spike.
Fullest schedule
June–July
Warm weather and long days make family trips easy. Expect the most traffic, the highest lodging demand, and more time behind slow wildlife.
Quiet value
May and October
Good for scenic drives and hiking when conditions cooperate. The park resort runs its lodges seasonally, roughly May through October, and lodge restaurants close between the end of September and the end of October, so verify lodge, road, and attraction schedules before you arrive.
Snow-season trip
Winter
A peaceful choice for snow and low crowds, but not the right season for a checklist of every road, lodge, and water activity. The Needles Highway gets no winter maintenance: it closes to vehicles with the first snow and does not reopen until April 1 or later. Iron Mountain Road closes periodically until crews can clear it. Campground showers and flush toilets may be shut from October 1 to April 30. The $25 vehicle license, good for 7 days, still applies.
Once you have dates in mind, find the best town for your itinerary and compare suitable hotels.
Book a guided Custer day
Wildlife loops and scenic drives are easier when someone else handles the route and keeps an eye on road conditions.

Start the Wildlife Loop early or late, when animals and light are usually better. Put the Needles Highway in the middle of the day when you have more daylight for the narrow tunnels and photo stops. If you are hiking, begin before the heat builds and carry more water than the short mileage suggests.
When should I visit Custer State Park for wildlife?
Drive the 18-mile Wildlife Loop Road in the first two hours after sunrise or the last two hours before sunset. Bison, pronghorn, and the begging burros are most active then, and traffic is lightest. For the season, pick May to June for bison calves or September for comfortable days and the rut winding down. The resort's Buffalo Safari Jeep Tour also departs year-round, with a 6 a.m. Sunrise Safari for the early window.
November to April: what stays open
From the end of October to the end of April, Custer Resorts keeps only Creekside Lodge and a few select cabins open, and the resort restaurants close. Overnight guests get a continental breakfast, and Creekside sells limited snacks and firewood, but no other stores, gas stations or restaurants in the park are open. The visitor center is open 9:00 am to 4:00 pm daily from October 1 to Memorial Day and closes on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Wildlife Loop Road stays open all winter, and the bison herd roams the park year-round. Every park trail except Sunday Gulch, which closes for ice, stays open when conditions allow, and the Winter Trail Challenge runs from Thanksgiving to April 1. For November 2026 hours at Mount Rushmore, Jewel Cave and the rest of the region, see the Black Hills in November. Typical snowfall by month is in the Black Hills weather guide.
Events that change demand
The Buffalo Roundup in late September is a major draw. July and early August bring the most conventional summer demand. Reserve early when your dates overlap a large event, then check the final road and program schedule. Mark the calendar: the next Buffalo Roundup is Friday, September 24, 2027. For herd size and past attendance, see the Buffalo Roundup statistics.
When should you avoid it?
Avoid choosing a shoulder-season date if your plan depends on every lodge, boat rental, or scenic road being open. Avoid peak summer if your priority is solitude and low prices.
A simple planning rule
- Choose the month based on weather tolerance and crowd tolerance.
- Check the operating dates for your top attraction. Lodges, the visitor center, and several roads change hours in fall, so see what changes in the Black Hills in October.
- Start wildlife viewing early, then use the middle of the day for scenic roads or a longer hike.
- Keep one flexible block for weather, traffic, or a bison jam.
