Black Hills in December
Mount Rushmore stays open every day but December 25, Jewel Cave opens its winter tickets, and one lodge in Custer State Park takes guests
Updated: October 26, 2026 | Added Custer and Spearfish parade dates; Holiday Express times from 1880train.com
December in the Black Hills runs on a short, fixed schedule. The big attractions keep winter hours, a handful of lodges stay open, and some of the roads that make the summer drives famous are closed to cars. This guide lists the December hours from the agencies that run each place, the NOAA weather normals, which roads to check, and the holiday events with confirmed 2026 dates. If a date has not been announced, we say so.
Quick Answer
Most of the big stops stay open. Mount Rushmore runs its grounds 6:00 am to 9:00 pm and its visitor center 8:00 am to 5:00 pm every day except December 25. Crazy Horse, Wind Cave and Jewel Cave (Tuesday to Saturday) keep winter schedules, and Custer State Park stays open on a $25 vehicle license with Creekside Lodge as its only winter lodge. Closed: the evening lighting program, the Sculptor's Studio, Needles Highway to cars after the first snow, and most seasonal lodges. Rapid City averages a 37°F high and a 14°F low in December.
“The visitor facilities at Mount Rushmore National Memorial are open all year, seven days a week, with the exception of December 25th.”

Those are the NOAA 1991-2020 normals for December at Rapid City Regional Airport. The average high is 10 degrees below November's 47.3°F, and snowfall rises from 5.7 to 6.7 inches. Precipitation is low, about a third of an inch for the month, so December in the Hills is cold and dry. Normals are monthly averages, so check the forecast for your actual dates. The table adds NOAA's Custer station, which sits 2,300 feet higher.

Roads to check before you drive
- Needles Highway (SD-87): closes to vehicles with the first snow and does not reopen until April 1 or later. When conditions allow, SD Game, Fish and Parks says it is open to hikers, bikers, snowshoers and skiers. It passes Sylvan Lake, and Sylvan Lake Lodge is closed for the season.
- Iron Mountain Road (US-16A): “does close periodically during the winter,” per GFP, depending on how quickly crews can clear it safely. It is the link between Custer State Park and Mount Rushmore, so have a second route in mind.
- US-16A in Keystone: closed at the S.D. Highway 40 intersection since October 5, 2026, for a bridge replacement, and SDDOT plans to reopen it by April 23, 2027. A short signed detour loops through town with temporary signals, a 12-foot width limit and a 50-foot length limit, so check the project page first if you are towing or driving a large RV.
- Wildlife Loop Road: open year-round, with careful driving required in winter conditions. Custer Resorts lists US-16A and all other state highways as open all year, subject to closures in extreme conditions.
- Spearfish Canyon (US-14A) and Highway 385 to Wind Cave: we found no published winter closure policy for either. Wind Cave says snow can close park roads temporarily. Treat both as check-the-morning roads.
- Badlands Loop Road: the National Park Service warns that roads through the Badlands may close in winter and can be slick and icy.
Road status changes overnight, so open SD511 the morning you drive. Route details and tunnel sizes are in our Black Hills scenic drives guide.

Mount Rushmore hours in December
From November 1 to March 9 the parking structure and grounds are open 6:00 am to 9:00 pm, against 5:00 am to 11:00 pm from March 10 to September 30. There is no evening lighting program from October 1 to May 22. The sculpture is lit from sunset to 9:00 pm, which in December is late afternoon. Our Mount Rushmore tickets, hours and fees page has the parking price, and the worst time to visit Mount Rushmore and best time to visit Mount Rushmore guides cover how December compares with other months.
Jewel Cave: winter tickets go on sale in December
The NPS fees page says cave tours “will become available for the entire season at the beginning of December,” and the winter season runs through April. We found no exact 2026 release date, so check Recreation.gov in the first days of December. Booking closes at noon the day before, or earlier if the tour sells out, and Recreation.gov adds $1 per ticket. Scenic Tours cost $16 for adults and Discovery Tours $6. Jewel Cave is closed Sunday and Monday, so build a Tuesday-to-Saturday day around it. More on tour types is in our Jewel Cave guide.
Wind Cave
Wind Cave sells winter tours on Recreation.gov from 120 days ahead until two days before the tour. About half of each day's tickets are held for same-day sale at the visitor center, and those often sell out soon after it opens at 8:00 am. The park says tours sell out on holiday weekends throughout winter, so reserve ahead for the weekends around Christmas and New Year's. The cave stays 54°F year-round. See the Wind Cave guide for tour lengths.
What Is Closed in December
- Mount Rushmore evening lighting program and Sculptor's Studio. Both are closed for the season; the studio reopens May 23.
- Most Custer State Park lodging and food. Custer Resorts says Creekside Lodge is the only lodge that operates in winter; the others run May through October. Resort restaurants are closed, and no other stores, gas stations or restaurants in the park are open.
- Sunday Gulch Trail. Closed in winter because of ice. Every other park hike is open when conditions allow.
- Jewel Cave Historic Area, Lantern and Wild Caving tours. The Historic Area closed for the season in late September, and the two specialty tours return in summer.
- Cedar Pass Lodge in Badlands. The lodge lists its season as April 15 to October 15. The White River Visitor Center is typically closed from late September through Memorial Day.
- Many Keystone lodges. Several are seasonal, and our Keystone hotels guide lists the open dates we could confirm for each one.
- December 25 at the federal sites. The Jewel Cave, Wind Cave and Badlands visitor centers are closed, the Mount Rushmore buildings are closed, and the Custer State Park Visitor Center is closed. January 1 closes the Jewel Cave, Wind Cave and Badlands visitor centers.
Things to Do in the Black Hills in December
The December list is built around places with winter schedules: the memorials, two caves, the Custer State Park wildlife drive, and a short list of events. For a longer menu of attractions, the things to do in the Black Hills page covers the full year.
Drive the Wildlife Loop
The 18-mile Wildlife Loop Road in Custer State Park is open all winter, and Custer Resorts says the bison herd roams free year-round. GFP recommends early morning or the hour before sunset for animals. Buffalo Safari Jeep Tours, run by Custer Resorts, are the one resort activity operating in winter, with limited daily departures. The park entrance license is $25 per vehicle for seven days, per the GFP license page. Start at the Visitor Center, open 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. More on the park is in our Custer State Park guide.
Hike or snowshoe a park trail
Custer Resorts says every Custer State Park hike except Sunday Gulch stays open when conditions allow, with snowshoeing possible, though trails can close temporarily at higher elevations. The Winter Trail Challenge runs from Thanksgiving to April 1; pick up the flyer at the Visitor Center.
Ski Terry Peak
Terry Peak, 8 miles from Deadwood, is the Black Hills ski area: a 7,100-foot summit, 1,100 feet of vertical and 30 trails. Its season usually opens the first weekend in December, snow permitting, and lifts run 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Lift prices, opening news and where to stay are in our Terry Peak ski guide.
See the memorials in winter light
Mount Rushmore is a short, free-entry stop with the grounds open until 9:00 pm. Crazy Horse Memorial is open daily and charges per vehicle: $30 for a car with three or more people from October 1 to May 14. Details are on our Crazy Horse Memorial page.

Rapid City's Winter Market, tree lighting and Festival of Lights Parade fall on Saturday, November 28, before the month starts. The Main Street Square ice rink opens the same day and runs noon to 8:00 pm daily, at $10 a day pass plus $5 for skates. It closes when the temperature drops below 10°F, so check before you go. Custer's Christmas Parade (5:30 pm) and the Spearfish Holidazzle Parade (6:00 pm) are both on Saturday, December 5, and Deadwood lights its tree at Outlaw Square on December 4. Every date, time and source is in our Black Hills Christmas events guide. Deadwood's New Year's Eve listing still covers last year. If you plan around one of these, check the town's visitor site the week before. The Black Hills in November guide has the Thanksgiving-weekend events.
Where to Stay in the Black Hills in December
Pick the base by the day you care about most. For the memorials and Main Street Square, use Rapid City hotels. For the caves and the Wildlife Loop, use Custer hotels. For a casino weekend, use Deadwood hotels. Several Keystone lodges are closed for the winter, so check each one's dates first.
Inside Custer State Park, Creekside Lodge and a few cabins are the choices. The front desk keeps limited hours, management is on site around the clock, overnight stays include a continental breakfast, and the lodge sells limited snacks and firewood. Groceries are in Hermosa or Custer, per Custer Resorts. Compare park options in our Custer State Park lodging guide.
We did not find a sourced December rate comparison for the region, so we are not quoting one. Run your dates on Expedia before you commit. We earn a commission from qualifying bookings at no extra cost to you.
Downtown Rapid City
Hotel Alex Johnson Rapid City, Curio Collection by Hilton
The walkable choice if you want dinner, Main Street Square and the ice rink a few blocks away without driving on an icy night.
Watch for: Mount Rushmore and the caves are a drive from town.
Custer, on US-16
Holiday Inn Express & Suites Custer
The closest chain hotel to Custer State Park, Jewel Cave (13 miles west of Custer) and Wind Cave (22 miles south). It cuts the pre-dawn drive for a 9:00 am cave tour.
Watch for: Dinner choices in Custer are thinner in winter than in Rapid City.
Deadwood
Holiday Inn Resort Deadwood Mountain Grand
A casino hotel with a concert venue and indoor pool, which makes a December night in town an activity on its own.
Watch for: Deadwood is the farthest base from Wind Cave and Custer State Park.
We did not find a seasonal closing date for any of these three, but confirm winter availability and the cancellation terms on the booking page. To compare more properties, search Rapid City hotels (opens in a new tab) or the wider Black Hills (opens in a new tab).
A 3-Day December Itinerary
The plan runs Tuesday through Thursday because Jewel Cave is closed Sunday and Monday. It avoids December 25 and January 1, when most visitor centers close. Treat the drive links as conditional: check SD511 each morning.
Day 1 (Tuesday): Mount Rushmore and the Wildlife Loop
Reach Mount Rushmore when the visitor center opens at 8:00 am and walk the grounds, then take the Information Center self-guided tour before it ends at 3:00 pm. Drive to Custer State Park by Iron Mountain Road if SD511 and GFP show it open, or by another route if not. Stop at the Visitor Center before it closes at 4:00 pm, then drive the Wildlife Loop toward sunset. Sleep at Creekside Lodge or in Custer.
Day 2 (Wednesday): Jewel Cave and Wind Cave
Book the 9:00 am Jewel Cave Scenic Tour when winter tickets open in December, and arrive 30 minutes early. In the afternoon, take Wind Cave's 1:00 pm Fairgrounds Tour, which you can reserve on Recreation.gov up to 120 days out. Check the drive time between the caves and book both only if it works. Wind Cave is 22 miles south of Custer.
Day 3 (Thursday): Crazy Horse and Rapid City
Visit Crazy Horse Memorial in the morning and confirm that day's hours by phone first; the memorial has not posted December hours. Finish in Rapid City, where the Main Street Square ice rink is open noon to 8:00 pm unless it is colder than 10°F. For a Badlands day instead, the Ben Reifel Visitor Center is open 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and entry is $30 per vehicle; see the Badlands guide. For other trip lengths, the Black Hills itinerary has more.
December FAQ
Is Mount Rushmore open in December?
Yes. The National Park Service says the visitor facilities are open all year, seven days a week, except December 25. In December the parking structure and grounds are open 6:00 am to 9:00 pm, and the Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center and Information Center are open 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Is Mount Rushmore open on Christmas Day?
The grounds and parking structure stay open on December 25, weather permitting, but every building is closed, including the visitor center, gift shop and café. On December 24 and 31 the gift shop and café close at 4:00 pm.
Is there a lighting ceremony at Mount Rushmore in December?
No. The evening lighting program runs from late May through September. From October 1 through March 9 the sculpture is illuminated from sunset to 9:00 pm with no ranger program or film, so a visit after dark means looking at the lit mountain from the grounds.

When conditions allow, it is open to hikers, bikers, snowshoers and skiers. Wildlife Loop Road is open year-round, and Iron Mountain Road closes periodically when crews cannot clear it safely.
