The Black Hills in October 2026

What changes on October 1, what closes by mid-month, and where the fall color will be

Updated: October 16, 2026 | Added the Keystone US-16A bridge closure and Adams House paranormal nights

October is a good month for the Black Hills if you plan around the calendar. The big attractions in the Black Hills stay open and the aspens and birches are turning. A lot of the summer schedule ends on September 30, though, and more of it winds down by mid-October. This guide lists what changes, with the 2026 dates and hours from the agencies that run each place.

No fixed date for Needles Highway: it closes to vehicles with the first snow of the season and does not reopen until April 1 or later, per South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks. Check SD511 the morning you plan to drive it.

Quick Answer

Mount Rushmore stays open all October, but the evening lighting program ended September 30 and the visitor center closes at 6:00 pm. Custer State Park lodges stay open through October, but the lodge restaurants are closed by mid-October. Needles Highway is open until the first snow. For color, go early in the month for higher elevations and Spearfish Canyon (past peak by its final October 5 leaf report), later for lower valleys.

“Needles Highway closes to vehicles with the first snow of the season and does not reopen until April 1, or later depending on conditions.”

Mount Rushmore

The NPS hours page lists the parking structure and grounds at 6:00 am to 9:00 pm for all of October. The gift shop runs 8:00 am to 8:00 pm through October 14 and 8:00 am to 7:00 pm from October 15. Carvers' Café closes at 6:00 pm through October 14 and at 5:00 pm after that, and ice cream moves into the café. Entry is free; parking is paid. Current parking rates are on our Mount Rushmore tickets, hours and fees page.

Crazy Horse Memorial

Crazy Horse Memorial is open daily year-round. When we checked on September 24, the banner on its site said 8:00 am to 7:00 pm while its daily schedule said 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, and it did not list October hours, so call (605) 673-4681 before an evening visit. The regional fall events calendar lists daily cultural programs through mid-October, a Native Americans' Day Celebration on October 12, and Korczak Remembrance Day on October 20. Our Crazy Horse Memorial guide has admission details.

Jewel Cave and Wind Cave

Jewel Cave is open Tuesday through Saturday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, and the main gate closes at 4:30. Its fall tour schedule runs through October 17. From October 18 the Scenic Tour drops to fewer departures, and several are first-come, first-served as staffing allows. The park recommends booking on Recreation.gov, where the booking window closes at noon the day before. The Jewel Cave Historic Area closes for the season in late September 2026. At Wind Cave, the surface is open all day, every day, but cave tour times change with the season, so call (605) 745-4600 to confirm. See our Jewel Cave guide for tour lengths.

1880 Train

The 1880 Train runs between Hill City and Keystone from May through December. In September and October it uses its enclosed cars instead of the open-sided summer cars, which matters on a cold morning.

Badlands National Park - Sunset and Stargazing (Private)

Private tour · 7h

Viator snapshot: 5.0/5 (26 reviews)

Route and experience details

A once in a lifetime opportunity to visit the incredible Badlands; first in the afternoon and into a golden sunset - followed by the official National Park stargazing program. The best of both worlds, this tour allows us the view wildlife and the parks formations before the sun sets, and then taking on the park after dark! Because Badlands National Park is not surrounded by big cities or other major sources of light pollution, night skies in the park are very clear. After dark, visitors can see many of the night sky’s greatest hits: constellations, the moon, satellites, and airplanes. But the special darkness of Badlands National Park helps visitors to see even more like planets, the Milky Way, star clusters, nebulae, the International Space Station, shooting stars, and, very occasionally, the aurora borealis.

Fall Colors in October 2026

Spearfish Canyon is past peak. The Spearfish Canyon leaf report declared peak color on September 28. Its last report of 2026, on October 5, said the canyon still held about 85% of peak color with leaf drop high, and that mid-canyon, from Bridal Veil Falls to Devil's Bathtub, was the brightest stretch. If you still want to stay up there, our hotels near Spearfish Canyon guide compares the town, the canyon lodge and Deadwood.

For the rest of the Hills, elevation decides the date. The More Than Just Parks forecast as of October 4 puts Black Hills National Forest peak around October 4 and suggests October 3 to 6. Its elevation bands show the high stands (6,000 to 7,000 feet) peaking around October 1 and now just past peak, the 5,000 to 6,000 foot band around October 8, the 4,000 to 5,000 foot band around October 14, and the lowest ground holding color until about October 20. It also notes that a warm September pushed the dates about four days later than its model alone.

  • First week of October: Spearfish Canyon, which hit peak on September 28 and was past peak by October 5, and the highest stands above 6,000 feet, which were already fading.
  • Second week of October: the 5,000 to 6,000 foot band, which the forecast puts at around October 8.
  • Late October: the lowest valleys and creek bottoms, per the forecast's October 20 band.

Routes and stops for each drive are in our Black Hills scenic drives guide.

Scenic Roads: Which Ones Close

  • Needles Highway (SD-87): closes to vehicles with the first snow and stays closed until April 1 or later. When conditions allow, the closed road is open for hiking, biking, snowshoeing and skiing.
  • Iron Mountain Road (US-16A): closes periodically in winter, depending on conditions and how quickly crews can clear it.
  • US-16A in Keystone: closed at the S.D. Highway 40 intersection since October 5, 2026, for a bridge replacement, and SDDOT plans to reopen it by April 23, 2027. A short signed detour loops through town with temporary signals, a 12-foot width limit and a 50-foot length limit, so check the project page first if you are towing or driving a large RV.
  • Wildlife Loop Road: open year-round. Early morning and the hour before sunset are the best times to drive the Wildlife Loop for bison.

Needles Highway and the Wildlife Loop are inside Custer State Park. The park entrance license is $25 per vehicle for one to seven days, $20 per motorcycle, or $60 for a nonresident annual license. Vehicles driving straight through on US-16A without stopping do not need one. Missed this year's Buffalo Roundup on the Wildlife Loop? The 2027 roundup is set for September 24.

The official schedule and ticket details are on the Black Hills Powwow Association site. The Film Festival schedule is published by the Journey Museum; Bierbörse runs noon to 5 p.m. on October 3 per the Rapid City visitors bureau. October 27 (Theodore Roosevelt's birthday) is also a National Park Service fee-free day for US citizens and residents, when their entrance fees are waived at parks that charge them. Nonresidents pay the regular fee. Mount Rushmore never charges entry, and its concession-run parking fee is separate.

Where to Stay in October

Lodging inside Custer State Park stays open all month. Custer Resorts says its seasonal lodges are open from the beginning of May through October, and its Sylvan Lake Lodge page lists lodging there as open May through October. The lodge restaurants close sooner: State Game, Sylvan Lake and Blue Bell serve through mid-October, and Legion Lake's dining room is closed in October. Once winter starts at the end of October, only Creekside Lodge and a few select cabins stay open for limited-service winter stays. If you want dinner at a park lodge, book the first half of the month. Options and rates are in our Custer State Park lodging guide.

For the second half of October, a town base gives you more to choose from. Rapid City hotels work as a base for Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park day trips, and Spearfish hotels put you at the start of US-14A for an early color drive up the canyon.

The Spearfish Canyon leaf report reached peak on September 28, 2026, and its final report on October 5 said the canyon was past peak but still held about 85% of peak color, with leaf drop high. The More Than Just Parks forecast, as of October 4, puts Black Hills National Forest peak around October 4 (best October 3 to 6), with the 5,000 to 6,000 foot band peaking around October 8 and the lowest ground holding color until about October 20.

Are Custer State Park lodges open in October?

Yes. Custer Resorts says its seasonal lodges are open from the beginning of May through October. The restaurants are what close early: State Game Lodge, Sylvan Lake Lodge and Blue Bell Lodge serve through mid-October, and the Legion Lake dining room closes after September, leaving grab-and-go food at its store. Once winter starts at the end of October, only Creekside Lodge and a few select cabins stay open for limited-service winter stays.
